Task 3 / Type Design & Communication

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 3: Type Design & Communication

I will create a typeface that has the hallmarks of a good typeface; subtlety or character, presence, legibility and readability. I will design: (a e t k g r i y m p n ! # , .). Upon completion of the font, I will create a basic A4-size poster displaying my font.

Research
Before designing fonts, we need to conduct research as a reference. I was looking for some information on the Internet, and I saw all kinds of fonts. Among them, I am interested in Lilita One, Carter One, and Gelasio. So I plan to refer to the three fonts I found and add some elements of my own to design my own fonts.

Gelasio

I also refer to various fonts from the website dafont.com in order to better complete this assignment.

Exercise
- writing diagonal, horizontal, vertical, and circular lines for all 5 tools in 5 different ways for each tool
- writing AOTMX for all 5 tools in 5 different ways for each tool
- select 1 option from the 5 different options from each tool and write "a e t k g r i y m p n" in the selected style. Choose either UPPERCASE or lowercase to write in.

Exploration

5 tools:
1. Chisel 3.0
2. Artline 210  0.6
3. Artline 4.0
4. Twin Monami
5. Brush

These is the vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and circular strokes followed by AOTMX I drew with five different tools.

After receiving feedback from Mr. Vinod, I started to explore writing using each tool.
1. Chisel 3.0

2. Artline 210  0.6

3. Artline 4.0

4. Twin Monami

5. Brush

After completing the explore tools, I chose the third font design to carry out my digital exploration. Before deciding which tools to use, I tried all the tools to see which one was more suitable. In the end, I decided to use Artline 4.0.

Digital Exploration
I take this line as my reference.

After that, I tried to digitize the typeface from my sketch using the brush tool or pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. At first I mistakenly thought that I needed to reproduce the fonts on the paper, so the fonts drawn with pen tool at the beginning were not ideal and looked uncomfortable, giving people a very messy feeling.

After checking with Mr Vinod, Mr Vinod pointed out my mistakes, and gave me a suggestion that it would be better to use the brush tool to complete this assignment.

After using the brush tool, I also used the pen tool to make some minor changes to the font, such as further extending and bending the tail of the font. I find the pen tool more convenient than the brush tool for controlling curves and angles.

Ascender line - 89.23pt
Cap line -  117.56pt
Median line - 288.87pt
Baseline - 799.15pt
Descender - 985.55pt

FEEDBACK

WEEK 8
General Feedback: Independent learning week.

WEEK 9
General Feedback: All writings are quite nice, and choose the better one that I like and more special.

WEEK 10
General Feedback: The writing in AI does not copy the writing that I design in sketches cause the sketches look messy and not quite nice, I need to draw other design that looks nice compared with the sketches. Besides, Mr. Vinod also give me suggestions about the adjustment of brushes.

WEEK 11
General Feedback: This week we're going to put the font we designed into FontLab and do some adjustments. Mr. Vinod gave me a suggestion that it would be better to use the brush tool to complete this assignment. Besides, Mr. Vinod also taught me how to adjust the brush and make my font more suitable.

WEEK 12  ABSENT

REFLECTION

Experience
When I am doing this assignment, I find it very interesting. Because you can use different tools to draw your favorite fonts on paper. This seemingly simple task is actually not simple. Not just drawing the font is complete, but slowly modifying and adjusting it to make the whole font look more comfortable and perfect.

Observation
During the class, Mr vinod kept teaching us the skills of designing fonts and sharing his experience. Whenever the teaching is over, Mr Vinod will check our progress one by one. Whenever you encounter difficulties, you can get help in time. Just like that day I misunderstood the meaning of mr vinod and copied the drawn fonts on the AI. mr vinod pointed out my mistakes and taught me how to modify and adjust. I learned a lot.

Findings
Through this assignment, I know that designing fonts is not a simple matter. I also learned that fonts are not just a shape, but also require spacing and angles. Although there are many setbacks and difficulties, I think this assignment is very interesting and beneficial to me.

I read the whole chapter that is Font Categories, Identifying and Selecting a Font, and Font Styles and Families in order to better complete my task 3 and know more carefully the importance of font spacing in typography. Through this chapter, I understand that creating a new font is not easy and need to spend more attention and patience to focus on our work progress.
