LECTURE RECAP:
Topic 6: Visual Analysis

VISUAL ANALYSIS
Is a method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles.
In its strictest definition - a description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake.
Visual analysis is a critical part of visual literacy, a skill that helps people read and critically interpret images, whether in a museum, on social media, in entertainment, advertising, or the news.

HOW DOES VISUAL ANALYSIS WORK?
Phase 1: Observation
Phase 2: Analysis
Phase 3: Interpretation

PHASE 1: OBSERVATION
Observation involves investigating the design's visual components closely and focusing on providing a thorough and accurate description of them in one's own language. It is imperative to approach the design devoid of any preconceived notions or biases. This stage promotes careful thought, attentive observation, and concise presentation of findings.

PHASE 2: ANALYSIS
To do an analysis, the thinker must go deeper into their observations, make connections, and develop design hypotheses based on the information acquired. In order to determine general design principles, it is necessary to analyze the interactions between particular visual aspects and take the viewer's experience into account. To improve comprehension, the study also examines how these elements' placement affects how the audience perceives and comprehends the artwork. This is done by applying knowledge of design principles.

PHASE 3: INTERPRETATION
The last stage involves the observer synthesizing their findings and analysis with background and context knowledge about the design that they have gathered from reliable sources. The goal of this integration is to reveal the design's underlying meaning and purpose. Interpretation aims to shed light on the deeper levels of the design's meaning and message by examining issues related to the artist's intentions and the artwork's cultural or historical importance.

VISUAL  ANALYSIS:

PHASE 1: OBSERVATION
The artwork appears to show a sharp contrast between poverty and prosperity at first glance. A massive palm that resembles the palm of Tathagata Buddha stands in the middle of the image, radiating wealth and happiness. A noblewoman surrounded by luxury sits atop this representation of affluence, while a scene of devastation is depicted below. Thick smoke enveloped the desolate terrain, while disenfranchised individuals labored amidst the debris and ruins, their countenances displaying the fatigue of destitution.

PHASE 2: ANALYSIS
Analyzing the composition reveals that the artist used contrast to highlight the glaring disparity between riches and destitution. The enormous palm attracts the viewer's attention vertically upward, highlighting the pinnacle of wealth, while the barren landscape's horizontal lines evoke a sense of imprisonment and stillness. The contrast between light and shade is emphasized through the use of chiaroscuro, which draws attention to the divide between affluent women and the underprivileged masses. Furthermore, the marginalized people below are portrayed as being in a subordinate position, while the woman at the top of the composition confirms her exalted status.

PHASE 3: INTERPRETATION
When viewed in the context of the artwork, the imagery offers a powerful critique of both economic disparity and structural injustices. The contrast between affluence and poverty highlights the institutional obstacles that support privilege and marginalization in society. The artwork draws viewers' attention to the differences that exist between the privileged and the underprivileged, encouraging them to consider the underlying causes of poverty and to support social justice and equity. In the end, the artwork is a call to action, imploring people to face and correct the structural injustices that support inequality and poverty in society.

FEEDBACK
Mr. Charles gives his approval and praises the well-done task. He says that after the blogspot is finished, I can move on to assignment 3.
