Research

  • Definition of Gaming Culture: Gaming culture is described as a subculture formed by game hobbyists, characterized by customs, symbols, traditions, and norms emerging from shared gaming experiences.
  • Inclusivity and Diversity Concerns: Inclusivity encompasses accurate representation of history, ethnicity, cultural behaviors, and various groups such as LGBTQ+ within games. Diversity concerns highlight the importance of reflecting the rich tapestry of human experiences and identities in gaming content.
  • Issues in Game Design - Assassin's Creed: Valhalla: Despite positive aspects like visual graphics, combat system, and story, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla faced criticism for certain design choices. Examples include historically inaccurate male hairstyles and overly decorated weapons, compromising realism for visual appeal.
  •  Toxicity in Gaming Communities: Toxic behavior within gaming communities includes verbal abuse, harassment, hate speech, threats, griefing, doxing, stalking, and swatting. Toxicity often arises from clashes in player expectations, such as competition in online matches, leading to abuse and harassment.
  •  Awareness in Art and Product Creation: Emphasize the importance of sensitivity to avoid misrepresenting cultural groups when creating art, products, or collectibles within gaming culture. Designers must be mindful of potentially sensitive topics and strive for authenticity, accuracy, and inclusivity in their creations.

How gaming culture is related with the cultural sensitivity?
  • Cultural sensitivity in gaming is essential for creating inclusive and engaging experiences for players from diverse cultural backgrounds. It involves understanding and respecting the cultural nuances, traditions, and sensitivities of different regions.

  • By respecting various cultures, a cultural sensitivity incorporated game can resonate with a global audience and foster a cross-cultural understanding.
  • Moreover, gaming culture is a reflection of different cultural elements, including social status, history, etiquette, norms and more. The gaming community needs to be mindful of the cultural implications of their activities, interactions and the contents they create or consume as games have a significant influence on popular culture.
