INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2: Data Collection

  • Field study (Taking photos of the products as our design direction of the packaging for the final task)
  • Online visual research for examples of successful platformer games and packaging.
  • Interview with Dr Charles Sharma Naidu Achu Naidu
  • Google Form short survey on public’s opinions and experiences on gaming culture

1.Field Study

We conducted a field study of the game figures store and the Japanese mart to closely inspect the existing design of the game characters and the Japan-exclusive snacks and drink packaging design.

Why is the snacks mostly individually packed?

Associated with the Omiyage culture in Japan, the individual share of packaging makes sharing much easier without worrying about the degradation of edibles’ quality.

2. Online visual research

To acquire more data we could not obtain from the locals, we turned to the trusty tool, the Internet. It further aided us in broadening our perspectives on the existing examples from different corporations and companies.

3. Interview with Dr Charles Sharma Naidu Achu Naidu

Our interview with one of our VIP lecturers, Dr Charles on campus to gain insights into his experiences as a lecturer and a gamer in his free time.

Even though the questions used for the interview were the same as the Google Form short survey, we received unique responses from Dr Charles on these inquiries. His answers opened up a whole new level of view on different perspectives compared to our young adult generations (Mostly university students) sa observed from the Google Form.

Interview Questions and Responses

Q1: “What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when mentioning about gaming culture?”

A1: “The first thing that comes into my mind is gaming for what purpose? Competitive gamers make up a large part of the gaming communities. Competitive games such as League of Legends, Mobile Legends, Apex Legends, Fortnite and the list goes on. Those games are very fast-paced but not for me. However, I like to have competition in games with different purposes. All games are competitive down from the structure of the games. For example, levels and obstructions. and the challenges set for the gamers to conquer.”

Q2: “Have you encountered any toxicity, or enforced toxicity among players when in-game or browsing through the gaming communities?”

A2“I have not experienced the toxicity but I have seen it happen. I feel that it depends on the player. Some players can adapt to the environment, as they know how to “survive” in those situations. However, some players cannot handle the level of toxicity. I don’t see how the issue matters to me, but I’m selective on the gaming communities. For example the Genshin Impact (Hoyoverse), it’s not toxic actually, but there will be a small subgroup that does not have the same opinion as my cultural style. It’s up to you whether you want to join them.”

Q3: “Have you ever consumed caffeinated food or drinks to keep you going for a bit longer during gaming sessions?”

A3: “I don’t rely on energy drinks or caffeine. The only “liquid” that affects me during gaming sessions is adrenaline because the thrill and shock of facing the challenge (fighting bosses) in certain games is the one that keeps me going. The moment I feel bored, I just log off the game. And yes, if you overconsume those products there will be negative effects on your body. Thus, moderation is required when you intend to take them for a long period.

4. Google Form short survey

We also conduct research on the public’s experience of gaming culture to further strengthen the direction of our design of final work.
