Task 3: Final Outcome Project

Outcome Summary

Our final product is a meticulously crafted combination of a 2D web platform mini-game that offers an engaging and interactive experience for our fellow gamers. The short but action-packed game is designed to captivate their interest and foster community interaction. Accompanying this gaming experience is the visually appealing snack and drink packaging, featuring integrated QR codes that seamlessly connect consumers to the mini-game. This holistic approach not only enhances brand engagement and drives product sales but also promotes a healthy gaming environment while effectively targeting the Japanese gamer market.

Main Focus-Game

We developed a 2D platformer-style web mini-game playable by just scanning the QR code. Most of the game content designs are closely tied to many aspects of Japanese culture and environment. Our game has a simple control mechanism for easier comprehension by all age groups from kids to elders, with only direction keys and jump keys similar to the iconic Super Mario platform games. To better emerge into daily life, we also allow gameplay compatibility between smartphones, tablets and computers, enabling anyone to enjoy this game suited to their preferences.

Game Rationale

How is cultural sensitivity applied in the game?

Cultural representation through:

Visuals: Aspects: Japanese food, Japanese religion (shinigami, shrines), traditional and modern structures, Japanese folklore (Yokai) and Japanese language. All of these aspects are sketched, designed and utilized in the game to create an authentic or close resemblance to the conditions in Japan.

This game exposes the players to the gaming culture and promotes the Japanese culture at the same time, that’s the benefits of games with interactive and immersive visuals.

Music: Focusing on one of the Japanese traditional instruments: the Shamisen or Sanshin. We intend to use Shamisen music for the background music to better immerse into the Japanese surroundings.

Progress: Web minigame

  • Conceptualization: We began by brainstorming ideas for the mini-game, considering elements that would resonate with our target audience and align with our overall goals. Drawing inspiration from Japanese gaming culture and martial arts themes, we settled on a concept that combines action-packed gameplay with cultural authenticity.
  • Design Phase: With the concept finalized, we moved on to the design phase. Our team collaborated closely to create detailed sketches and storyboards outlining the game's characters, environments, and mechanics. We paid particular attention to ensuring that the visuals and narrative elements reflect Japanese cultural traditions and values. Level design assets to improve the graphics of the game and match the Japan settings at the same time. An adequate amount of Japanese are used in the design that closely resembles the real-life infrastructures. Level design assets categories include collectables, signboards, structures and platforms.
  • Development: Once the designs were approved, our development team sprung into action. Us, we began coding the game mechanics and implementing the artwork. We aimed for smooth gameplay mechanics, intuitive controls, and minimalist graphics to captivate players from the moment they launch the game.
  • Final Polish: With the game mechanics refined and the QR code integration successfully implemented, we entered the final polish phase. Our team meticulously reviewed every aspect of the game, fine-tuning details, optimizing performance, and ensuring that the overall experience meets our high standards of quality.  https://gd.games/games/d06f6a7e-be63-4ec0-8125-c7b59716bdae

Progress: Packaging

  • Conceptualization: We initiated the packaging design process by brainstorming ideas that resonate with the target audience in the Japanese gaming market. Drawing inspiration from Japanese culture and gaming aesthetics, we conceptualized designs that blend functionality with cultural authenticity.
  • Design Phase: Our design team meticulously crafted two initial concepts: one with the Japanese inspired art design and another with the characters from our web minigame.
  • Integration of QR Code: In parallel with game development, we integrated a QR code feature into the drink packaging design. This QR code will seamlessly connect players to the mini-game when scanned, enhancing the overall gaming experience and promoting product engagement.
